Intelligent 4WD System "E-4WD"

To maximize the cabin space of compact vehicles, Nissan has developed a low emission 4WD system called "E-4WD."

The "E-4WD" is the offspring of Nissan hybrid technology and is light and compact. It shifts the vehicle from 2WD to 4WD when the need arises. The E-4WD consists of a motor and clutch, a rear wheel drive unit of low gears, a generator for powering the motor wheel drive, and a 4WD controller.

When the front-wheel slides, the 4WD controller signals the generator. The electric power produced by the generator turns the motor, which is positioned in the rear of a vehicle, and the power is transmitted through the clutch to the rear wheels. Under ordinary operating conditions, the rear wheel drive clutch (E-4WD) is not engaged, and the vehicle operates in economical 2WD.

In addition, the motor is positioned in the back of the vehicle. This means that a propeller shaft is unnecessary, and that unlike ordinary 4WD vehicles, there is no loss of indoor space.

The 4WD system can also be used to make lighter weight, which helps to increase the fuel economy of the vehicle. Moreover, the vehicle can go from 4WD to 2WD with the flip of a switch. A compact vehicle called the "mm", which was exhibited at the 35th Tokyo Motor Show in 2001, comes equipped with "E-4WD".
