The 20th International Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition (EVS20)

EVS20 was held from November 15th to 19th at the convention center in Long Beach, California, in the U.S. The first and second days were for exhibitions of participating companies, test drives, and pre-conference workshops.

1. EXHIBITS

There were 97 booths. The participants were from universities and public organizations as well as major automotive companies. The automotive companies and parts suppliers mostly had exhibits related to HEVs and FCVs. The exhibits related to EVs were for small short-distance vehicles (limited use) and their motors and batteries. Li-ion batteries was exhibited by a few battery companies.
(See pictures 2 & 3.)

2. RIDE 'N' DRIVE

The test drives were divided into three categories. Each category had a different type of vehicle. The first category was for long-distance vehicles, the second for low-speed vehicles, and the third for motorcycles.
There were 19 types of car models in the first category. And the test drives were on a specially organized course. One lap took about 5 minutes. Each vehicle had its own spot for starting and stopping. So the participants knew where to line up for the vehicle they wanted to try. (See picture 4.)
The lines were not so long. But it took me more than 2 hours to try out over 10 vehicles. Test driving more than 10 FCVs and HEVs in one day was a very valuable experience. And during the test drives, the participants were able to experience normal driving speeds and acceleration. (See animation.)

3. PUBLIC SESSIONS

The public sessions consisted of about 140 presentations. They started on the 17th.
